Pattern: turning form into fabric

Pattern can be used to add pleasing complexity to a surface or form

and act as a contrast to solid forms. Pattern imbues cultural identity inline

with fashion trends and domestic nostalgia.

Donovan hill are masters of pattern and use it effectively to transform

simple geometry into a complex fabric that is very satisfying to the eye.

Santos Place is a prime example of how a simple rectangular tower can

become beautiful through subtle patterns which are themselves rectangular.

The floor plates form the base of the pattern which is created by variations

in pastel bands of varying colour and translucency. The pattern repeats to

create vertical rhythms through the tower which becomes an intricately glazed

artifact with a finer grain than the surrounding building stock. The colour palate

is optimistic and sophisticated.

Wickham Square

Wickham Square is my last project for DAB710 4th year Arch Design

Concept

The project had a very interesting site with a prominent position in Fortitude Valley. The biggest opportunity in my opinion was the reclamation of flat open urban space with more room to move than China Town Mall and Brunswick street which are linear in nature with sloping ground planes. The programatic opportunity lay in the reinforcement of the Valleys existing focus on hospitality. It seemed logical to use the prominence of the sites location to help create a destination that epitomized the Valleys forte whilst acting as an 'Urban Catchment' for activity at the edge of the Valley Heart.

love the cladding and pavilion forms along with the residual space in between. love the soft grass layer and the way the landscape sits in and around the buildings. The light pastels give a sharp contrast and define the outer shell.

Balam house by Arkhefield:

Love the collage of form and material.

Love the timber detailing, edges and ledges.

Great outdoor space adjacent to timber box.

Use of concrete, timber, tiles and render.
